Concerns Over Urban Development and Community Spaces in Thessaloniki

Updated: Oct 18

In a significant move to address pressing urban development issues, community leaders and representatives from various organizations convened on September 22 to discuss the future of the former Karatassiou camp and the Pavlos Melas Metropolitan Park in Thessaloniki, Greece. The meeting featured notable attendees, including Mr. Motzos from PERKA, Mrs. Eleni Kavazidou (ESAI EN ROI), Mr. George Macavos (PROTEKTA), and Mr. Sakis Lazaridis, former Green deputy mayor and president of the Cultural Association of Karatassiou. Together, they voiced their concerns and outlined plans for an upcoming open event that aims to engage all stakeholders—organizations, residents, and local government representatives—in a dialogue about the latest developments in the area.

The discussions raised alarming issues regarding the potential fragmentation of the Karatassiou site. There is growing concern about the gradual cession of parts of this community area for indefinite periods, which, according to recent statements from the Deputy Minister of Defense, could lead to the construction of housing for military personnel on land that rightfully belongs to the citizens of Thessaloniki. This move starkly contrasts with the long-standing efforts of the local community and government, who have fought for at least 15 years to maintain the site as a public utility, as outlined in the General Urban Plan.

The upcoming event aims not only to inform but also to rally community support around the vision of keeping the former camps as public open spaces, in opposition to privatization and potential economic exploitation.

The Pavlos Melas Metropolitan Park, which is currently under construction, has faced numerous delays and complications. Recent announcements regarding the renegotiation of the terms of the original concession contract add further uncertainty to the project's future. This situation emphasizes the need for transparency and community involvement in planning and development processes.

As the event organizers emphasize, the local community will not back down from their fight for these public spaces. Their determination stems from decades of advocacy to ensure that the former camps are preserved as green areas for public use, reflecting the community's right to accessible and inclusive urban spaces.

A Call to Action

In light of these developments, all municipal counselors have been invited to participate in the forthcoming open event at Karatasou Park, scheduled to take place at the central entrance. This gathering will provide an opportunity for community members to voice their concerns, share ideas, and strategize the next steps in their ongoing fight for the preservation of their public spaces.

The call to action is clear: “We’re not giving up this fight.” Community members are encouraged to join forces and advocate for the use of the former camps as vital public open spaces. The time has come for residents to unite, engage in meaningful dialogue, and ensure that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes that impact their environment and quality of life.

It is important that residents remain informed and involved, standing together in their commitment to protect the future of their shared urban environment.
