"Empowering SKYRTHALIA Youth: The Impact of Urban Film-making on Thessaloniki's Green Potential"

In Thessaloniki, an exciting movement is stirring among the city's youth. Yiannis Fragkoulis, a dedicated filmmaker and educator, has led an initiative that equipped young people from SKYRTHALIA project with essential filming skills. The training course has taken place in Chateu Leconte house, villa Mordroch and the 4th Polichni's Primary School, oposite Karatasou park and lasted three days (14-16 December 2024).

This program went beyond simply teaching technical cinematography. It harnessed the art of storytelling through visuals to highlight Thessaloniki's green potential and its urgent environmental challenges.

Understanding the Basics of Filming

As youth participants began their filmmaking journey, they dove into the core principles of filming. Fragkoulis underscored the significance of composition, lighting, and storytelling. By honing these skills, young filmmakers were empowered to not only capture the essence of their city but also to articulate compelling narratives about sustainability.

These filmmaking fundamentals gave the youth the tools to express their viewpoints while showcasing their hometown. They learnt how to frame shots effectively, utilize natural light creatively, and weave engaging narratives that resonate deeply with audiences. This foundational knowledge served as a launchpad for their adventures in exploring Thessaloniki's urban landscape from their unique perspectives after the training course and within one week until the end of the program (17-22 December 2024).

Youth as Commentators of Sustainable Issues

Through their lenses, SKYRTHALIA youth tackled meaningful community issues, particularly sustainable practices and the city's green potential. Every frame they shooted served as a commentary on the pressing environmental challenges Thessaloniki faces. This initiative highlights the city’s imperfections and reveals its opportunities for growth.

This engagement allows young filmmakers to develop a richer understanding of their environment. They become vocal advocates for sustainability, celebrating the actions that can enhance their urban space. Their films act as reminders for both citizens and policymakers to prioritize environmental awareness and take action.

Capturing the City’s Imperfections and Potentials

The initiative focused on exposing Thessaloniki's environmental challenges while also revealing its potential for improvement. Young filmmakers roamed the streets, recording areas in need of enhancement. Their visuals contrast neglected spaces against flourishing parks, promoting community awareness about the importance of nurturing green areas.

The impact of visual storytelling is profound. It can spark contemplation, motivate action, and cultivate a collective vision for a sustainable future. As these young filmmakers shine a light on the city's strengths and weaknesses, they inspire viewers to feel a sense of responsibility, encouraging them to act towards a greener Thessaloniki.
