Thessaloniki is a city known for its vibrant culture and historical landmarks. However, it is facing an urgent environmental issue that threatens its charm. Recent studies show that Thessaloniki only has about 8 square meters of green space per person, a figure far below the 50 square meters recommended by the European Union. To address this challenge, volunteers from countries including Ukraine, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany united to create a revolutionary manifesto, seeking to breathe new life into Thessaloniki’s green areas.
A Collaborative Effort
This remarkable collaboration emerged from a shared passion for the environment among diverse volunteers. Each participant contributed distinct perspectives, leading to a rich exchange of ideas. They diligently assessed Thessaloniki’s parks and gardens, looking for both strengths to build on and weaknesses to address.
The group conducted over 7 parks in Thessaloniki, with random interviews, short videos and a photoreportaz within the local community to gauge resident opinions on green spaces. This feedback was instrumental for creating an emotional barometer based on those data. By directly engaging with the individuals who use these spaces, the manifesto aligns closely with the community's desires. It aims to create green areas that genuinely improve the quality of life for Thessaloniki’s residents.

The Green Manifesto
After extensive discussions, the volunteers crafted a thorough manifesto, capturing their vision for a greener Thessaloniki. Key recommendations include:
Increasing current green spaces
Enhancing local biodiversity
The manifesto champions the development of multifunctional green spaces, which can serve as venues for social interaction, recreation, and education. The goal is to create areas that are not only beautiful but also promote a sense of community.
A standout feature of the manifesto is its emphasis on sustainability. These initiatives aim to inspire residents to take an active role in preserving and caring for their green spaces, fostering a strong sense of ownership.
Bridging Cultures Through Environmental Action
This initiative illuminates the role of environmental action in uniting various cultures. By gathering volunteers from different nations, the manifesto exemplifies the strength of collaboration in tackling shared challenges. It reinforces the notion that everyone has a part to play in caring for the environment.
The project is a powerful reminder that addressing environmental issues needs collective action. As the volunteers prepare to share their manifesto with local authorities, they are optimistic that their efforts will spark important conversations about making Thessaloniki greener. This movement could set a precedent, encouraging similar initiatives in cities across Europe, where urban living faces comparable environmental stresses.
A Path to a Greener Thessaloniki
With the diverse voices of the volunteers captured in this groundbreaking manifesto, Thessaloniki has a unique opportunity to revamp its urban green spaces. By focusing on sustainable practices and community involvement, the manifesto addresses the critical need for more green areas.
The commitment of these volunteers to this cause is both admirable and inspiring. Their work not only seeks to improve the lives of Thessaloniki’s residents but also serves as a model for urban centers grappling with environmental challenges, if deeper testing the pilot application of the EMOTIONAL BAROMETER of the research results. The hope is that this manifesto creates a foundation for a greener, more sustainable future, enriching the lives of everyone in Thessaloniki.
